Ellesmere District is south of Christchurch, about halfway to Ashburton. The district was named after Lord Ellesmere in a bygone era. I am not sure he played golf?
The history of the club dates back to 1894 when the then-named Leeston Golf Club was born. In 1900, they moved the club to land around the racetrack and eventually renamed the club Ellesmere Golf Club in 1913. In 1928, the horses trotted off and left the golfers to have the place to themselves.
The course grew from nine to 13 holes in 1931, and 34 years later, in 1965, eighteen holes were completed. And now stands the course in all its glory, wide looking fairways and plenty of trees lining the course.
