Mt Maunganui Golf Club

Mt Maunganui is a popular surf beach location and has an 18 hole golf course set in a peaceful tree-lined setting. It is only 5 minutes from the middle of the Tauranga township.

If you are looking for 9 holes, play somewhere else. The course comes in 3 blocks of 6 not the traditional 2 of 9. So play 12 or 6 or 18.

Way back in 1935 there were only 450 lucky souls who lived in Mount Maunganui but they decided they needed golf in their lives. These people engaged with the people that could help and cut a great deal.

The land was offered free, the only stipulation was the course has to be called Brandonmere Links. The good negotiators of the Mount also got the free services of New Zealand’s only “official” golf architect, Mr C Redhead. I once had a girlfriend who was a redhead, no hair just a red head!

They couldn’t score a free 18 holes so started with 9, and expanded to 13 and finally 18 before the war started in 1939. In the middle of this bloody war the land and golf course was sold and chopped up.

It took til 1947 before the club could buy the land that it stands on. The course got a re-design at that time and hasn’t changed much since.
