Onewhero Golf Club

The friendliest course in the Waikato, an hour south of Auckland at Pukekawa.

Onewhero Golf Club is located at Pukekawa, a southerly drive out of Auckland for 40 minutes. You get off State Highway One at Mercer and cross the impressive Waitako river to find this challenging course. There are 18 holes set in a mature tree-lined setting.

The Onewhero Golf Club has just celebrated 90 years as a golf club. Formed in 1929, the club has had moved a few times over the years but golf has been played at this location since 1961.

A fertile part of the world, with rich volcanic soil, promotes great growth. The course has impressive trees, water hazards and bunkers, you need to be prepared to be challenged.

Get to Know the Holes

Five holes make the cut here, with the 11th doing double duty as the hero image above — its green sits behind a rock-walled pond crossed by a footbridge, the closest thing on this card to a signature hole. The 1st and 2nd play out from the clubhouse before the course settles into the hillier back nine; the 12th and 13th close it out with a stream crossing and a bunkered, elevated green.

Local Character

Onewhero wears its history and its humour equally well — a wrought-iron archway from an earlier clubhouse, a hand-painted mural of native birds beside the fairway, a stretch of holes nicknamed Amen Corner, and a sign that leaves no doubt about whose paddock is whose.

Club History

Ninety years on from its founding in 1929, the club marked the milestone with a plaque unveiled in November 2019 — thanking the members, volunteers and sponsors who’ve kept the course going through its moves and changes.
