Wairakei International Golf Course

Wairakei International Golf Course is unique. A golf course nestled inside 450 acres of Sanctuary. There is a pest-free environment behind the fences, giving the area an ecological canvas like no other.

The course opened in 1970 in response to the boom in demand for a quality golfing tourist attraction to the area. The government of the day invested heavily in the development.

This is one of New Zealand’s finest golf courses. Weaving through the 18 holes is pure joy. The beauty of the surroundings, the native birds, waterfalls, streams, and the odd geyser make it unforgettable.

The choice to appoint Commander John Harris to design this course was a wise one. This bloke had already designed some amazing golf courses all around the world. The plan at the time was simple, built the best golf course in New Zealand, they certainly did a job worthy of the title. The course has hit #1 in the country over the years.

The course sprawls out over 6,460 metres and is not short of a bunker – there are 108 of those. A sulphurise blast on your journey only adds to the experience.

The 14th is a monster at 548 metres from the back tees, “the Rogue” has a boomerang-shaped green that is a wee bit special. Enjoy.
