Winton Golf Club

Eighteen holes in rural Southland, thirty minutes north of Invercargill on the road to Queenstown.

Drive north out of Invercargill for 30 minutes towards Queenstown and you will get to Winton. A vibrant little town in rural Southland.

Winton Golf Club is an 18 hole course that is one of the best in the area. Looked after by the locals it is in good condition on both fairways and greens.

You’ll find a friendly Southland welcome here and some less friendly small greens to keep you on your toes. A challenging course for young and old.

The course is Championship quality and should not be overlooked when playing in the South.

Get to Know the Holes

Just two of Winton’s hole markers made it into this photo set, but both are worth a look — each one doubles as a local sponsor board, a nice small-club touch.

Hole 16 sign, Cassino, par 3, sponsored by Winton's Middle Pub and Central Southland Lodge, with a $100 hole-in-one shout
Hole 16 · Cassino (Par 3) — sponsored by Winton’s Middle Pub, $100 up for a hole-in-one
Hole 18 sign, Kia Ora, par 4, 336 and 310 metres for the two tees, backed by a dairy hygiene sponsor board
Hole 18 · Kia Ora (Par 4, 310–336m)

Local Character

Winton’s own copy calls this “a friendly Southland welcome” with “some less friendly small greens” — and the course backs that up with a bit of genuine farming-country character right on its boundary.

A green with a red and white checkered flag, dairy cattle grazing in the paddock just beyond the boundary fence
The back fence doubles as a dairy paddock — cattle grazing right up against the green
A white marker post labelled GUR, for ground under repair, in front of a green and bunker
A “GUR” post — ground under repair, marked and left well alone
