Welcome to country golf in the Horowhenua region, just outside the interesting township of Shannon. If you find yourself situated between Levin and Palmerston North and you have $10 in your pocket and 9 holes on your mind then stop here. Or splash out another fiver and play all 18, you will not be disappointed.
The history of the golf in Shannon started in 1919, originally on Otauru Road and then moved to Buckley Road in 1925. The club split in 2, named Buckley and Shannon golf clubs. The war saw off Shannon and Buckley remained, although they moved to the current location in 1968 after a brief stint just down the road. They retained their Buckley Golf Club name even after all the moving.
Drive up to the clubrooms you will see 3 standard holes of a typical country course, on the flat and home to the local sheep. But don’t be fooled they rest of the course has many quirky holes and interesting challenges.
One of New Zealand’s country delights and home to a golf loving community who have raised this course well.
