In late 2008 the opening of Jack’s Point Golf Club added true world-class to the already brilliant New Zealand golf portfolio.
John Darby has a reputation for the outstanding, Jack’s adds another notch to his career. The course is nestled in the surroundings and word has it excavation was avoided at all costs to allow this course to be at one with nature.
The location of the course is just breathtaking, only a 20-minute drive from downtown Queenstown. The course sits between the Remarkable mountains, towering over the course and a majestic Lake Wakatipu.
Jack’s Point Golf course is one of the most visually spectacular in the world. There are 5 different tees to chose from and I’d suggest you get as far back as you dare. The shorter tees miss some of the true challenges of the course, so be bold and go at least Blue.
The mix of tussock, rustic bunkering, marshland and lake are wonderful. The greens are immaculate, undulating and multi-tiered. The is nothing out of place even the wall on the 15th is pristine.
The unique thing about Jack’s Point Golf Club, other than the unbeatable location, is that the majority of the holes are stand-alone. There are two points to this, they all have their own character. And more important, rarely do you see another hole other than the one you are on. No side-by-side fairways until the 17th and 18th. When you leave a green you head out of sight to start the next hole.
The course reveals itself one piece at a time, taking you on a journey of discovery. Your favourite hole changes at every tee box and on every green. If it isn’t the 7th as you strike a downhill infinity shot at the green with the whole of the Wakatipu in front of you.
Then it is the 6th before that high on the hill exposed to the whole landscape. Holding a driver and trying to land the short but menacing 283 metre par 4.
It could be the drive over the paddock and the wall on the 15th. I could go on all day about the best of the best, even the “spare” par 3 between 16th and 17th was legendary.
