Located next door to Wellington airport the links of Miramar Golf Club are special. The club has been boxing with the airport for many years to keep its golf course from the demands of progress.
The club started life in the suburb of Karori in 1905 before moving to the peninsular of Miramar in 1908. The course has been remodelled in its lifetime to fit the available land and is still under a cloud of airport progress. A long history includes hosting the New Zealand Open in 1926 and 1939.
The airport will finally get its way in 2025 to capture the land the back nine sits on.
The course terrain is very linksie – hollows and humps are standard. The pot bunkers confirm its links status, there are over 100 of the wee buggers. The course is squeezed into a small parcel of land but comes up as a winner. It would sit on the Top NZ courses list for most.
