The windswept and rugged west coast of Auckland is the location for this link’s masterpiece. The black sand beaches, the gannet colony, and the surf all take a back seat to the golf course.
The authentic links set amongst the dunes, with heather, pine trees, and sea views from all around the course make it a favourite of many. The course rates highly and would sit inside anyones top 20 in New Zealand.
The club was formed in 1956, the course opened in 1960, with a layout upgrade in the 1990’s. The use of Kikuyu grass on the tightly mown fairways will give you a good lie all year round. Muriwai Golf Club claims to never close because of the good drainage, I’m sure some days the wind might keep you off of the course though.
The 8th at Muriwai is a classic par 3 that needs a different club every round dependant on the wind.
The clubhouse is elevated with amazing views. Stop for a beverage and cake when you get around this seaside beauty to complete the experience.
A great video of the course is here
