(renamed recently from Ohope International Golf Club)
Situated on the slimmest sliver of land 15km south of Whakatane – The Sunniest place in New Zealand- is the Ohope International Golf Club. On one side is the Ohiwa Harbour, and the other looks out at the Pacific Ocean.
This golf course is a remarkable seaside links, it belongs in the wonders of Aotearoa golf chronicles. With great views of the smoking White Island and Whale Island, it is a holiday in itself.
In 1971 the poor but enthusiastic golfing people of the area started to develop this natural and incredible golf course. Only 68 members opened the course in 1975.
Starting as a nine-hole beauty, this golfing vision was a little rough around the edges. They extended it out to 18 holes in 1987 and probably added International to their name as they realised they had created something special.
In recent times the name has changed to Ohope Beach Golf links.
This course is one of New Zealand’s best and attracts golf lovers from all around the world. It certainly is in the reckoning for a place in NZ’s Top Courses.
