Taupo Golf Club

Taupo Golf Club is a unique golfing experience with two 18 hole golf courses. Tauhara is shorter and more friendly to the less experienced. Centennial is a challenging big kids course.

The club is on the edge of Taupo township. There is plenty of thermal activity in the area which enhances the experience in this parkland setting.

The oldest of the 2 courses is Tauhara, named after the impressive Mt Tauhara, visible from the course. Established in 1928, the club went about developing the first nine-hole course right here.

The vision of a man named Vivian Fail worked the pumice land, experimenting and hoping he could grow grass on the block. He did, and the “Taupo Experimental Block” gave the fruit of a golf course. Opened officially in 1931 on labour day.

Following the war, demand was such that the full 18 holes were developed. The first-ever Mayor of Taupo Joe Story had a hand in the opening of the full Tauhara 18 holes in 1954.

Golf was all the rage in the 1970s and Taupo was booming with tourism. Wairakei International opened in 1970 and it was in 1973 that Taupo Golf Club opened its 2nd course – Centennial. A full 6,025 metres of a masterpiece.

The course is a mix of tree-lined parkland, wasteland moors, and a skirt with thermal wastelands. So nothing short of interesting for the discerning golfer.
