Alister MacKenzie designed the course in the 1920s, opening in 1927, truly a “fringe of Heaven” – the Maori translation of Titirangi. The course is only 20 minutes from central Auckland, worth the drive to one of New Zealand’s top golf courses.
A world-class golf course, not long after the opening of the course it hosted the NZ open in 1933, following on in 1951 and 1962 the open returned. Many an international great has walked the fairways, Arnold Palmer and one of my favourites, Sandy Lyle.
The extensive bunkering, the massive undulating greens and the a modern refit of some the holes makes this pure quality.
The 13th is called the “Wrecker” no fear standing on the tee box aiming at an elevated hidden fairway. Only to encounter a gully and lone pine in the middle of the fairway. The greenside bunkers take no prisoners. Enjoy!
